Hi there,

I’m Ashley, one of the camp directors at YMCA Camp Massapoag! My voice will be the main one you hear across the forthcoming blogs. Our team of directors wanted to create a blog for our camp as a way to highlight things happening at camp during the on & off season, help you (the reader) get to know us, and to allow us a space where we can expand on different topics we feel passionate about.

The name of this blog, “Poag Blog,” comes from the nickname given to camp and campers by each other. You might hear your child talking about ‘Poagtown’ or ‘Poag water’ or ‘Poag’s got talent;’ all of these are ways that our campers and counselors have taken a simple nickname and given it purpose. Poagtown is the village for our 5^th & 6^th graders, Poag water is what we call our well water because of its slight orange tint from the minerals (we get it tested and we all drink it!) and Poag’s got talent is our version of a talent show!

Camp is about embracing creativity, building confidence, and making memories. This blog will almost serve as a time capsule of memories, we’ll reflect on the past, how Massapoag came to be, and examine our current programming and philosophy behind decisions the directors make that shape camp into what it is.

One of the upcoming posts will be more in-depth bios of the camp directors. We want families to know us and not just be names you read in an email sign-off. We hope that if you’re reading this as a prospective family or you’re a current family, you are getting something from this blog and the future ones. And if not, let us know in the comments below!
